Why Does My Hand Go Numb When I Sleep?

Waking up with a numb hand or tingling fingers can interrupt your sleep and leave you wondering whether you slept awkwardly or have a trapped nerve. Sometimes the sensation fades after you change position. When it happens repeatedly, however, it is worth looking at which fingers are affected and what positions seem to trigger it.
At Cold Laser Perth, based within Lakeside Chiropractic in Joondalup, we consider the full nerve pathway, from the neck and shoulder to the elbow and wrist—when assessing recurring hand symptoms. This guide focuses specifically on night-time hand numbness, what you can try at home and when a clinical assessment may be appropriate.
Why does hand numbness happen more often at night?
While you sleep, your arm may stay in one position for hours. A wrist folded under a pillow can increase pressure on the median nerve. A bent elbow can aggravate the ulnar nerve, while sleeping with an arm overhead or beneath your body may irritate structures around the shoulder. Because you are not regularly changing position as you would during the day, pins and needles may become more noticeable before you wake up.
A single brief episode that resolves after moving does not necessarily indicate a lasting nerve disorder. Repeated awakenings, numbness that remains after getting up or daytime hand weakness deserve closer attention. For practical ideas on neck and pillow support, see Lakeside Chiropractic’s sleep posture guide.
Which fingers go numb? The pattern offers useful clues
Thumb, index and middle finger: possible carpal tunnel syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome develops when the median nerve is compressed as it travels through the wrist. Tingling often affects the thumb, index and middle fingers, and sometimes the thumb-side of the ring finger. People may wake with an urge to shake the hand or notice symptoms while holding a phone or steering wheel. The little finger is usually spared.
Our Cold Laser Perth carpal tunnel guide explains the condition and available care options. You can also read our more detailed blog on cold laser therapy for carpal tunnel syndrome in Perth, or explore the Lakeside Chiropractic carpal tunnel condition page for the clinical signs that may be assessed.
Little finger and ring finger: possible cubital tunnel syndrome
If the little finger and the adjacent side of the ring finger become numb, the ulnar nerve may be involved. This nerve passes close to the inner elbow and can become irritated when the elbow remains tightly bent during sleep. Some people also notice aching near the “funny bone” or reduced hand coordination if the problem progresses.
Avoiding prolonged pressure on the inner elbow may help, but persistent symptoms should not be dismissed. Lakeside’s cubital tunnel syndrome page describes this elbow-related nerve problem and how it differs from carpal tunnel syndrome.
Numbness with neck or arm pain: possible cervical radiculopathy
The nerves supplying your hands originate in the neck. When a cervical nerve root becomes irritated, pain, pins and needles or altered sensation may travel through the shoulder and arm into particular fingers. Neck pain can be present, but not everyone experiences it. Symptoms may change when the head turns or tilts, so treating the wrist alone may miss the source.

Arm heaviness or tingling with the arm overhead: possible thoracic outlet syndrome
Thoracic outlet syndrome involves irritation or compression of nerves, or sometimes blood vessels, as they pass between the neck, collarbone and upper chest. Some people notice arm fatigue, tingling or discomfort when the arms are raised or when the shoulder stays in a strained position. Symptoms overlap with other conditions, so the pattern alone cannot confirm a diagnosis.
Our article about thoracic outlet syndrome and cold laser therapy in Perth discusses this presentation in more detail. Lakeside also has a thoracic outlet syndrome condition page. A hand that becomes unusually cold, pale or blue, especially with swelling or severe pain, needs urgent medical assessment.
What if both hands go numb?
Both hands can be affected by sleeping positions or bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome, but tingling that also affects the feet, persists through the day or develops without a clear positional trigger may have causes beyond local nerve compression. A GP may consider conditions such as diabetes, thyroid problems, vitamin deficiencies or other forms of neuropathy. For a broader overview, see our existing article on possible causes of hand numbness and our nerve-related conditions information.
What can I do to reduce numb fingers while sleeping?
Start by noticing your usual sleep posture rather than trying to force a completely different position. If your thumb and first two fingers tend to tingle, avoid tucking a sharply bent wrist beneath your head. For diagnosed mild-to-moderate carpal tunnel syndrome, a properly fitted wrist splint that maintains a near-neutral position overnight is a commonly recommended conservative option. It should not be so tight that it causes additional pressure or discomfort.
If your little and ring fingers are affected, try not to sleep with the elbow held in a deep bend or pressed against a firm surface. A clinician may suggest a suitable nighttime positioning strategy if cubital tunnel syndrome is suspected. Do not tightly bind the arm yourself, particularly if you have swelling or circulation symptoms.
For neck or shoulder-related symptoms, keep your head comfortably supported, avoid sleeping with your arm trapped beneath you, and consider whether prolonged overhead positioning triggers tingling. During the day, changing position and adjusting your workstation may also help manage aggravating activities. Lakeside’s desk posture advice and wrist and elbow exercise handout are useful starting points; exercises should be selected to suit the diagnosis and stopped if they worsen symptoms.
These ideas are not a substitute for assessment if numbness is persistent, progressive or accompanied by weakness. A change in position may ease symptoms without resolving the underlying issue.
How is the cause of night-time hand numbness identified?
An assessment begins with questions about which fingers are numb, how long the sensation lasts, whether one or both hands are involved, and whether you have pain in the wrist, elbow, shoulder or neck. A clinician may then examine joint movement, grip and thumb strength, sensation, reflexes and the positions that reproduce symptoms. The aim is to distinguish a problem at the wrist from one affecting the elbow, neck or another part of the nerve pathway.
Depending on the findings, a GP or specialist may recommend nerve-conduction studies or further investigation, particularly for ongoing loss of sensation, significant weakness or an uncertain diagnosis. Management should follow the likely cause—not simply where the tingling is felt.
Can cold laser therapy help with hand numbness?

Cold laser therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to interact with tissues. Researchers have investigated its potential effects on pain signalling and cellular processes. For selected patients, it may be discussed as an adjunct to a broader care plan rather than as a universal treatment for numb fingers.
The evidence depends on the condition. Small trials have explored low-level laser therapy for carpal tunnel syndrome, but a Cochrane review found the overall evidence to be low or very low quality and could not establish a reliable clinical benefit over placebo or other non-surgical care. Evidence specific to cubital tunnel syndrome or thoracic outlet syndrome is more limited still. Cold laser therapy should therefore not be described as a proven way to release a compressed nerve or guarantee nerve regeneration.
At Cold Laser Perth, the MR5 ACTIV PRO LaserStim® technology is one of the tools available when clinically appropriate. You can learn more about what to expect during a cold laser therapy session. If assessment identifies relevant musculoskeletal factors, care at the same Joondalup clinic may also involve suitable manual approaches, activity advice and rehabilitation exercises through Lakeside Chiropractic. Treatment choices and outcomes vary between individuals.
When should hand numbness be checked urgently?
Call 000 if numbness starts suddenly with facial drooping, trouble speaking, confusion or one-sided weakness, as these can be signs of a stroke. Sudden severe arm pain with a cold or discoloured hand also needs urgent assessment. Arrange prompt medical review for worsening weakness, difficulty holding objects, persistent loss of sensation, visible hand-muscle wasting or numbness following a significant injury.
Even without emergency symptoms, numbness that repeatedly wakes you, becomes more frequent or interferes with normal activities should be assessed by an appropriate health professional.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my hand stop tingling when I shake it?
Shaking or repositioning your hand changes the pressure and position around nerves, so tingling may temporarily settle. It does not prove that the cause is harmless or that the wrist is always responsible.
Can a pillow cause hand numbness?
A pillow or sleep position can contribute if it keeps your neck, wrist, elbow or shoulder in an uncomfortable position for a long time. However, a pillow change alone will not necessarily resolve an underlying nerve condition.
Should I book cold laser therapy straight away?
An assessment comes first. The most appropriate option may be advice on positioning, a wrist splint, rehabilitation, medical referral or another treatment. Whether laser therapy is suitable depends on the diagnosis and the available evidence.
