Cold Laser Therapy for Sinusitis in Perth

Introduction
Sinusitis refers to inflammation of the sinus cavities air-filled spaces within the skull that drain into the nasal passages. When the mucous membranes lining these cavities become inflamed or blocked, it can cause facial pressure, nasal congestion, headaches, and difficulty breathing.
Sinusitis can be acute, often following a viral or bacterial infection, or chronic, lasting more than 12 weeks. While medications and nasal sprays are often used, some patients seek non-invasive adjunctive therapies to help manage inflammation and promote sinus drainage.
Cold laser therapy (low-level laser therapy, LLLT) may assist by reducing local inflammation, improving tissue oxygenation, and supporting the body’s natural healing processes.

Common Symptoms of Sinusitis
- Facial pressure or pain (especially around the eyes, forehead, or cheeks)
- Nasal congestion or discharge
- Headache or heaviness in the head
- Post-nasal drip and throat irritation
- Fatigue or reduced sense of smell
- Difficulty breathing through the nose
For chronic sinusitis, symptoms often fluctuate and can be aggravated by weather changes, allergies, or upper respiratory infections.
How Cold Laser Therapy May Help

Cold laser therapy works by delivering low-intensity light energy into the sinus region, helping to modulate inflammation and promote microcirculation.
For sinusitis, laser therapy may assist by:
- Reducing mucosal inflammation: LLLT has been shown to downregulate inflammatory cytokines, potentially improving sinus drainage.
- Decreasing pain and pressure: Laser light may help desensitise local nerve endings and improve lymphatic flow.
- Supporting immune response: Laser exposure can enhance cellular metabolism and ATP production, which supports tissue repair and recovery.
- Improving sinus ventilation: By easing swelling around sinus openings, normal airflow and drainage may be restored more easily.
This gentle, non-invasive treatment can complement medical management for both acute and chronic sinus conditions.
Integration with Chiropractic and Other Modalities
At Cold Laser Perth, sinus management is approached holistically:
- Cold laser therapy: Applied over sinus regions (frontal, maxillary) and lymphatic drainage areas to reduce swelling.
- Manual therapy: Techniques around the cervical and thoracic regions may assist drainage by improving posture and nerve communication.
- Lifestyle advice: Addressing hydration, humidity, and allergen exposure to minimise flare-ups.
- Adjunctive care: Working alongside your GP or ENT specialist where medical therapy is required.
- Combining these modalities supports both symptom relief and better sinus function long-term.
Recent Research
Several studies have explored the potential role of low-level laser therapy in sinus and nasal inflammation:
- Naghdi et al. (2022 / 2023) use of low-level laser therapy for patients with chronic rhinosinusitis: a single-blind, sham-controlled clinical trial. Fourteen adult CRS patients underwent a sham-then-active laser protocol using an 830 nm Ga-Al-As continuous laser, applied to sinus points (cheeks, forehead). Outcomes were measured via total symptom score (TSS). The active LLLT resulted in a significant improvement (p = 0.015, Cohen’s d = 0.69) compared to sham.
- Jung, Chung, Choi, Chung & Mo (2021) study about clinical efficacy and safety of low-level laser therapy in patients with perennial allergic rhinitis: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. In this RCT, patients with perennial allergic rhinitis received intranasal LLLT vs sham treatment. The primary outcome was change in total nasal symptom score (TNSS), and secondary outcome was quality of life (Rhinoconjunctivitis QOL). The LLLT group showed significantly greater improvement in TNSS (p = 0.011) and improved QOL (p = 0.036). No severe adverse events were reported.
- Treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis using low level laser (physiotherapy journal, 2015). This paper presents application of LLLT in chronic rhinosinusitis as a therapeutic modality, reviewing outcomes and suggesting effectiveness in symptom relief and mucosal inflammation control. (Note: this is not a large RCT but a clinical application report.)
